2010 AMSS Convention Report
The American Milking Shorthorn Society (AMSS) held a successful convention July 7 through 10 in Kelso, WA at the Red Lion Hotel. 150 Milking Shorthorn enthusiasts gathered from across the country. During the tour, the participants visited Rosecrest Farms and Ecua Farms near Chehalis and Bossy Acres near Ridgefield, WA. At Rosecrest, Sharon McCool and husband Gary featured their Homestead Swiss styles cheeses that are popular throughout Washington. Of special interest was the Rosecrest Herb and Garlic Swiss that has been featured in the Space Needle Restaurant in Seattle for over a year.
During the Annual Meeting President, Pat Agnew of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin highlighted the positive financial outcome for 2009 with an increase in net assets of over $13,000. President Agnew also noted that including 2009 registrations, the AMSS has averaged 3,098 registrations a year for the past six years.
In electing a new Board of Directors, Clint Cribbet of Bethany, IL was re-elected with Catherine Agnew of Oconomowoc, WI, Kylie Daniels of Savannah, GA and Steve Marak of Meeker, OK being newly elected. During the re-organization meeting, Thomas Landrum of Guilford, IN was elected President and Fabian Almeida of Cleburne, TX was elected Vice-President. Greg Clark of Cornish Flats, NH, Susan Lee of Jerome, ID and Cindy Climer of Chillicothe, OH were elected to the Executive Committee.
At the Annual Awards Breakfast, Nathan and Jody Nus of Gold Mine Farms in Arlington, IA received numerous trophies. Included in these was the W. Arthur Simpson Memorial Award for Top Milk Record of 2009, earned by Gold Mine R Outlaw Bella 338 2E92 with 33,760 lbs milk in 305 days at 7 years and 6 months. The Gold Mine Ebrose Karli 147 2E91 won both the Willard E. Gerner Meritorious Brood Cow of the Year Award and the 2009 Cow of the Year. Gold Mine also won the Top Herd Production Increase for 2009.

- Elaine Pratt Bodey of Urbana, OH received the W. Arthur Simpson Award for Top Fat Record of 2009 with Bar-D Harp 2E91 with 5/01 305d 2x 28,650m 4.7% 1,343F 3.3% 947P.
- Stuart Rowe of Orland, CA won the Louie O. Landrum Memorial All-American Sire Award for Innisfail Red Ruben.
- Don Crawley, Gravette, AR was awarded the Prestigious Citizen of the Year Award.
- Jessica Hasheider, Sauk City, WI won the Harry Clampitt Young Breeder Award.
Ending the Convention was the American Milking Shorthorn Society's 2010 National Convention Sale, held on Saturday July 10, 2010. Total gross sales were $60,350. The 16 animal lots grossed $46,400 with an average of $2,900. Embryos brought $13,950 for 40 embryos and a $348.75 average. Due to location the sale was a Video Sale. Two lots Topped at $5,500
PO Diamond Dairybell Delite ET, a just fresh Innisfail Prince of Diamonds from Clayside KR Dairybell 2A01 E91, sold for $5,500 from Upchurch, Oliveria and Rowe, Tillamook, Oregon to David Croshaw of Kentucky. Deltie's maternal sister was Reserve All American Winter Yearling 2008, her dam was Honorable Mention Sr. 3yr Old 2006 and her maternal sister is the dam of the Junior All American Jr. 2yr old 2009.
Also selling for $5,500 from Spencer Weimer, Emlenton, PA to Bill Bartlett, Salisbury, MA was Lot 4, choice by Kuszmar Megadeth and out of Spungold-R Logic Precious V88-2yr. Precious was All American Fall Yearling Heifer 2009, is sired by GMC Rebel Logic-ET and is out of the World Champion milk producing Milking Shorthorn Gold Mine Poppys OT Kay 2E95 with three records over 46,000. The choice is due in December.
Third high came from Stuart Rowe, Orland, CA on Lot 5 for $5,200. Bill Bartlett Sailsbury, MA also bought this lot. Lot 5 was a choice of any two or three year old in the Innisfail Herd that was not entered in the AMSS or Kingsmill Futurities. |
