JUNIOR MEMBER PROGRAMS
The following applies to all Youth who wish to show at a National Milking Shorthorn Show:
Youth must be a member of the National Junior Milking Shorthorn Society by August 1, 2010. Animals must be owned by the Junior Member by August 1, 2010. Substitute showman must be a Milking Shorthorn National Jr. Member by August 1, 2010. These are rules for the Junior Milking Shorthorn Show, only.

- Each candidate must be in good standing of a state Junior Milking Shorthorn Breeder’s
Association, if there is one in their state; and be an active junior member of the American
Milking Shorthorn Society for a minimum of 2 years. Active includes entering in national and/or local
competitions, attending meetings, attending conventions, and being active in meetings and fundraisers.
- A candidate must be single and between the ages of 18 and 21 when they apply. Thus being able to
attend when they are 22.
- Each candidate must enter on an official entry blank, signed by his or her parent or guardian.
- Each candidate is responsible for his or her own expenses in connection with the contest.
- Upon winning, the exchange student is expected to provide the following information during
and after the trip:
a) Maintain a daily journal of activities while abroad
b) Submit an article for the Junior page of the Milking Shorthorn Journal upon your return.
c) Take pictures while abroad
d) Present a PowerPoint presentation during the following year’s National Shorthorn Convention to the
membership.
e) Prepare a photo album for the Milking Shorthorn booth at World Dairy Expo to be on display
and visit with attendees about the trip if possible.
- A committee of five or more selected by the Milking Shorthorn Junior Executive Committee
will judge candidates’ applications and conduct an interview to the top five applications. This committee
will be the same committee that interviews the queen candidates.
a) These interviews will be conducted at the National Convention.
b) Applicant must be present to interview.
c) Candidates are judged on maturity, poise, personal appearance, general intelligence, speaking
ability, knowledge and experience with Milking Shorthorns and general dairy industry knowledge. The
winner will be announced at the banquet.
d) The trip will be approximately a month in length and will be during the summer of 2011. (The
months are flexible depending on the student.)
- AMSS and Junior AMSS will provide airline transportation and money to purchase a passport
if needed. Once in Australia all meals, lodging and transportation will be taken care of from hosting
families. The student is encouraged to take some spending money for purchase of souvenirs and other
personal items if wanted.
- A completed application (on next page) for the program must be submitted to the American
Milking Shorthorn Society, 800 Pleasant Street, Beloit WI 53511 and postmarked by June 1st 2010.
National Milking Shorthorn Outstanding Progressive Breeder Contest
- Each candidate must be a member in good standing of a state Junior Milking Shorthorn Breeder's Association, if there is one in his/her state; and be a junior member of the American Milking Shorthorn Association.
- Two divisions are available.
- A candidate must be between the ages of 9 and 13 for Jr. Division or from 14-17 for the Sr. division as of January 1st and must have carried a Milking Shorthorn Project at least one year.
- A committee of three will judge candidates on their written application and an interview will be conducted on knowledge of the Milking Shorthorn breed, dairy management, leadership activities, general dairy industry knowledge, and future plans. Candidates will be interviewed at the National Convention.
- Applicants must be present to interview.
- Recipients of the award will receive a $100 scholarship.
- A completed application (requires Adobe Reader) for the contest must be submitted to the American Milking Shorthorn Association, 800 Pleasant Street, Beloit WI 53511 no later than June 1, 2010.
National Milking Shorthorn Rachel Surridge Youth Contest
- Each candidate must be a member in good standing of a state Junior Milking Shorthorn Breeder's Association, if there is one in his/her state; and be a junior member of the American Milking Shorthorn Association.
- A candidate must be at least entering their junior year of high school.
- A committee of three judges selected by the state hosting the National Convention will interview candidates. The interview and application will be judged on participation in the home farm operation, knowledge of Milking Shorthorn cattle, leadership in AMSS junior society, outside youth activities and preparation for the future.
- Recipients of the award will receive: 1st place- a $250 scholarship from the AMSS plus 10% from the Junior Society Treasury (not to exceed $150.)
- A completed application (requires Adobe Reader) for the contest must be submitted to the American Milking Shorthorn Association, 800 Pleasant Street, Beloit WI 53511 no later than June 1, 2010.
National Milking Shorthorn Queen Contest
- Each candidate must be a female member in good standing of a state Junior Milking Shorthorn Breeder's Association, if there is one in her state; and be a junior member of the American Milking Shorthorn Association for a minimum of 2 years
- A candidate must be single and between the ages of 16 and 21
- Each candidate must enter on an official entry blank, signed by her parent or guardian and provide a recent picture of the candidate
.
- Beginning in 2010 queen applicants must also submit a presentation in a slide show format. This presentation must then be printed off and included with application. The presentation should consist of 4-6 slides containing the following:
a. General information about applicant. Name, age, hometown, etc.
b. Involvement in dairy industry.
c. Reasons for applying for queen candidacy.
d. Goals as queen.
- Each candidate is responsible for her own expenses in connection with the contest
- Upon winning, the Queen is expected to attend all the events listed below and will be reimbursed $100 for each event.
- National Convention of current year
- Eastern National Milking Shorthorn Show at the PA All American Show, Harrisburg, PA or the Northeastern National at the Big E, Springfield, MA
- International Milking Shorthorn Show, Madison, WI
- Winter National Milking Shorthorn Show, Louisville, KY
- National Convention of following year
- The queen is responsible for her own travel expenses including, airfare, gas, rental cars, and meals when traveling to an event
- The queen will also receive a $250 scholarship from the junior society
- Applicant must be present to interview
- A committee of three or more selected by the state hosting the National Convention will judge candidates applications and conduct the interview. Candidates are judged on poise, personal appearance, general intelligence, speaking ability, knowledge and experience with Milking Shorthorns and general dairy industry knowledge. The winner will be announced at the national convention banquet and a crown and sash will be furnished by the hosting state. The hosting state will also furnish a banquet ticket to the incoming queen.
- The queen should represent her title at every Milking Shorthorn event she attends and shall be trained and ready to exhibit her knowledge of the Milking Shorthorn breed and the dairy industry to media and speaking opportunities that may arise through out the year.
